The Nagarjuna Hills or Nagarjunkonda as they are called in the local language is located close to the Nagarjuna Dam. The Nagarjunkonda Buddhist Stupas are all that remain of the many Buddhist structures that were submerged when the Nagarjuna Dam was constructed. Holding the remains of Buddhist monks, these Stupas have been in existence since ancient times. The area was named after Acharya Nagarjuna, a Buddhist scholar and is the most revered and important Buddhist site in South India.
