Devotees of Lord Shiva travel long distances to offer their prayers at the beautiful Omkareshwara Temple in Coorg. If you are also of Lord Shiva, then do include this important place of Hindu worship in your itinerary and visit it to be a part of the Shiv Bhakti cult. Commissioned by King Lingarajendra II in 1820, this Shiva temple was built to pacify the soul of a Brahmin sage who was massacred for political reasons.. It is believed the soul of this Brahmin was later possessed by evil elements who wanted to take revenge for the cruel act of the ruler. To tame these spirits, King Brahmarakshasa had brought in a Shivalingam from the holy city of Kashi and had placed in the inner sanctum of this temple. Thereafter, this holy lingam came to be known as Omkareshwara and is worshipped by devotees coming in from all corners of the world.
The architectural splendor of his popular temple is a fine example of Gothic and Islamic styles and is a haven for those looking for tranquility and peace. There is a dome in the centre of this sprawling temple, which in turn is flanked by four turrets all around. The magnificent entrance to this temple boasts of a copper plat with inscriptions of the history of the temple etched in small letters . Here, you can relax in the tranquil environs of a pretty pool or feed the colorful fish that live in the clear waters of the same. A must visit for all visitors in Coorg.
