Not many people are aware that there in an embankments dam situated in the Mandi district on the Beas river, by the name of the Pandoh Dam, in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The project was duly completed in the year 1977 and the main purpose of this project was the generation of hydroelectric power. This project was actually a portion of the art of a run-of-the-river power scheme, and the water is diverted to the River Beas towards the southwest through a stretch which is as much as 38 kms and passes through various long systems of tunnels and channels. The water from the Pandoh dam is utilized for generating power at the Dehar Power House before it is finally released into the Sutlej River, thus it connects both rivers, Beas as well as Sutlej. There are six penstocks here which have to be crossed before the water finally reaches the power house.
