The meaning of Pemayangtse is – Perfect Sublime Lotus. This Gompa is Sikkim’s oldest and most important Nyingmapa Gompa. It was constructed in 1705 and is still preserved quite well. It is set on a hilltop at an altitude of 2100m and is surrounded by the gardens and the traditional cottages that were meant for the resident monks. You will find a huge statue of Buddha on the ground floor and the upper floor contains all the eight reincarnations of Padmasambhava.
On the top floor there is seven tired model which represents Padmasambhava’s heavenly abode of Zangtokpelri, which was made by the manual procedures and was dedicated to Dalai Lama. The Chaam dances are the specialty of the Gompa which are conducted in the month of February/March. Pemayangtse is located at 1.5 kms from Upper Pelling and can be easily combined with your visit to Rabdentse. The place is well popular for the religious and cultural beauty that it prevails. Not only to the pilgrims but also the other tourists, it offers great atmosphere to relax and enjoy to the fullest.
