As the name suggests the Periyar Tiger Trails is meant specifically for preserving the Tiger population in India. This project was started originally by the Kerala Forest Department to promote sustainable eco-tourism. This is a very exciting and adventurous trekking and camping program which is actually managed and run by a team of professional poachers and people who cut trees. These people are highly reliable and have a thorough knowledge of the entire forest terrain Only 6 tourists are allowed at a time who are even accompanied by five guides and one armed forest guard for security purpose. You could be lucky enough to spot wildlife like a giant squirrel, Nilgiri langur, elephant and a Tiger too!
The normal stretch is about 20 to 35kms of trekking depending on the route you choose to take. The route for trekking passes through several hills and valleys and all this a have a variety of tropical plans and wide open spaces. You could even take package which is for one night and two nights stays.
