One of the places to see if you are visiting the area are the wonderful Pinjore Gardens that were constructed in the 17th century and showcase Mughal architecture. They have beautiful Mughal walled gardens all around the place arranged on seven different levels with water running all around. The place also offers a wide view of the Shivalik Hills. It was planned and brought into existence by NawabFidai Khan who was also credited with the design of the Badshai Mosque in Lahore.
These gardens were planned as a retreat for the Mughal king who came here with their harems. When the goiter outbreak took place here in the same century the gardens were vacated by the Mughals and came under the aegis of the Maharaja of Nahan, Himachal Pradesh. Each year there is a heritage festival organized here. The Budgerigar Motel (733-231877; dmRs 150, rRs 500-2500; a) here has very clean rooms along with balconies and two four-bed dorms. There is a free entry to the gardens here which runs in the middle of the bar cum restaurant here. The JalMahal(meals Rs 35-200) present here lies in the middle of the one of the lovely green ponds present here. The gardens are only about an hour away from Chandigarh by bus (Rs 15, one hour, frequent) or cab (Rs 200).
