Planning a trip to France

Regarding renting a car in France, I'd advise an internet search to find the best deals because they change from time to time. I suggest you start your trip in Paris. We always start our trips from a city because we still have the 'big city' buzz so we're rarin' to go. By the end of a trip driving through the countryside we've slowed down and the last place we want to be is in a city. So, I'd recommend a few days in Paris at the start and then pick up a car in the city to head to Normandy. Any rental agency will allow you to drop off your car at CDG at the end of your trip. After Normandy, you can head to the Loire region. Blois is a lovely place to stop. We've driven throughout France many times and we have never made advance reservations except in Paris, where we usually begin our trip. On our last three visits to Paris we stayed at the Hotel Clement (thanks to Linda's recommendation) which is inexpensive and in a terrific arrondissement. Your decison on whether or not you make advance room reservations depends on your comfort level with uncertainty and on whether or not you're fussy about where you sleep. In our 30+ years of travel around the world, we've rarely made advance room reservations and, so far, we've never lost a night of sleep.
