The majority population here is Hindus and the festivals here are celebrated with much enthusiasm and energy. The Navratri is one festival which is celebrated here in a special manner and one must be here in person to witness wonderful scenes all around. The Yatra also picks up pace during this period as more number of people like to go around this time.
This festival is dedicated to all the nine incarnations of the Goddess Durga and here it is celebrated with a lot of excitement. During this period the entire town is decked up like a new bride and with each day the enthusiasm of the people only increases. The natives of the place have inherited the Dogra culture here and this is a very good time to be a witness to people dressed up in their traditional clothes here. Throughout the nine days of the festival there are cultural events that are organized here in addition to various singing events. There are participants coming from all over the state and singing devotional songs here. There are daily prizes to be won as well as a big prize at the conclusion of the events when the festival ends. There are also nice dramas put together by the local people and you can have a good time enjoying the local dances, songs as well as other forms of artistry on show. There may be large crowds at this time of the year but it is also a time you would not like to miss out on for touring this place.
Katra is the place from where the Yatra for Vaishno devi starts at a location called Banganga. The Yatra is organized the year round but people consider the Navratri as the time which is the most auspicious for this religious purpose. The trek from Katra to the Vaishno devi shrine is about 13kms. And you have the options of either walking up the mountain shouting chants of JAI MATA DI or even going up in a horse carriage if it is not easy for you to walk.
