Preventing tummy ills while traveling

Just a note about the recent discussions on preventing colds and stomach troubles while travelling. Be aware that antibiotics combat bacteria and are useless against viruses, which cause the vast majority of upper respiratory tract infections, such as colds and the flu, as well as sore throats, coughs, and ear infections. Moreover, overuse of antibiotics contributes to development of drug-resistant "super bugs" that cause severe illness, death, and incredible expenditure of resources in treatment, prevention, and development of new antibiotics that the bugs are not resistant to. Type "super bugs" into any search engine. Here is an excellent recent article on traveller`s diarrhea and the issues involved: "When an Upset Stomach Roils Your Trip" (New York Times).
