This is a memorial where the Father of the nation-Mahatma Gandhi was cremated, after his his assassination on the 31st of January in 1948. This simple black marble platform is located towards the South of the historic Red fort monument, on the bank so the river Yamuna. Right besides this is the place where India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was also cremated, in the year 1964 and that is places is known as “Shanti Vana”. Mrs. Indira Gandhi and her two sons- Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi were also cremated in the same place.
Now when you visit this place you will notice that an eternal flame of lit up at all times. There is an epitaph put up here, which reads” Hey Ram” or “Oh God”, these were believed to be the last words uttered by Mahatma Gandhi. It is now a beautiful park, which is beautifully landscaped, which is today a lot many number of foreign dignitaries visit Raj Ghat and pay their homage to the father of the Nation. A ceremony is held here every Friday, since Gandhi passed away on Friday. Prayers are held at this place on Gandhi ji’s birth and death anniversaries.
