A very famous old landmark in Southern Mumbai is the Rajabhai tower and it is located in the Fort campus of the Mumbai University. It is a very popular tourist destination and it was built during the 19th centure by Sir George Gilbert Scott. He wanted to give it a similar design like the Big Ben in London and managed to do so. The tower got its name from Rajaji who was the mother of Premchand Roychand an eminent stock broker who had funded the entire project. Since the mother was a staunch Jain follower she would have her dinner before the evening set in and the tower was designed since she was blind and she could get to know the time hearing the evening bell.
The tower features a mix of Venetian as well as Gothic architecture and is about 280 feet high. The staircase leading to the top has decorative pictures adoring the walls and the Clock tower even features the University library.
