The Rani temple is situated eight in the middle of the city of Gulmarg and one can see the temple almost from every corner of this beautiful town. This is primarily a temple which has been dedicated to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva. The Rani temple is known to be one of the last few odds and end, which belong to the Dogra dynasty. This dynasty ruled the initial princely state of Jammu & Kashmir.
The temple got its name from legend, Maharani Mohini Bai Sisodhia, the wife of Maharaja Hari Singh, originally built this temple and visited this temple daily for offering prayers to Lord Shiva. As you visit this old temple, one can still see the humble and kindly priest, a Muslim who performs the aarti and also distributed prasad among devotees. He has been doing this since the last 22 years. It was during the period of militancy, when the natives of the town fled, he himself took up the responsibilities of the priest of this temple. He generally starts his day by uttering verses from the Quran and shlokas from the Gita. The temple can be visited on all days of the week from 6:00 AM - 8:00 PM.
