Ravangla is a beautiful town which is located in the western part of Sikkim and is expanding vastly. The town itself doesn’t have many places of interest to see but serves as a good starting point to visit a number of nearby locations which appeal the tourists. There is a main market adjoining the main highway where you can buy a number of local things to take with yourself as memory. There are a few good restaurants and cafes where you will find delicious food.
At a distance of around 13 kms from Ravangla, there is a place called as Ralang where Palchenchoeling Monastic Institute is located. This is where around 200 Kagyu order monks live. You can find them chanting inside in mesmerizing unison. In the main hall, there is a 9 meters high statue of Buddha. The gompa is quite popular for its well preserved sculptures. There is also an Old Ralang Gompa which was established in 1768 and is also a worth visiting place. You can go from Ravangla to Ralang via a taxi which doesn’t cost much.
There is YungdrungKundrakling 5.5 kms from Ravangla, which is the only Bon monastery in Sikkim. The Bon faith preceded Buddhism in Tibet but has largely been subsumed by it. There are a few differences in the deities and you will have to pay a close attention to identify the differences. Also, the wheels are turned anticlockwise. Reaching this place from Ravangla is quite easy via the shared cabs. This is one of the most beautiful monasteries you will find with a different view.
