The seat of governance of the Gujri and holding the distinction of being one of Jammu and Kashmir’s oldest towns, Reasi was founded by Raja Bhim Dev in the 8th century. Until 1822, Reasi had remained as an independent principality and was then taken over by Raja Gulab Singh-- the Governor (Raja) of the hill region of Jammu (he was responsible for consolidating all the smaller sized states into a large unit). After a lot of administrative changes in the status of Reasi, it is now an integral part of District Poonch (called Rajouri).
Tourists love to experience the various bounties of Reasi, which is bound by Tehsil Gool-Gulabgarh in the north, Tehsils Akhnoor and Jammu in the south, Kalakote and Tehsil Sunderbani in the west and the scenic precincts of Tehsil Udhampur in the east. With a population of 1,20,380 according to the 2001 census and a Hindu majority (with 25.57% Muslims); this sub-division experiences temperate and sub-tropical climatic conditions.
