Better known as Peo for the local people, Rekong peo is the administrative centre for the Kinnaur district. This is a small town where tourists often enjoy staying for some time. The town is situated near Sutlej River and remains cold for most part of the year. It receives heavy amounts of snowfall during the winters and looks amazing. The main attraction of the town is Kinnaur Kalachakra Celestial Palace (Mahabodhi Gompa), with a 10m-high statue of Sakyamuni and great views across to Kinner Kailash. The Kinner Kailash is considered to be a holy place and is worshipped by the local people. There is another important significance of Rekong peo. If you are looking to travel beyond Kinnaur to the Spiti valley and Tabo in particular, you will have to get the permit here. It is a mandatory requirement and therefore tourists do have to spend some time here. The village Kalpa is not very far from here which is well known for its aesthetic beauty and the culture. Rekong Peo visit will help you experience a refreshing break that you will not find in other hill stations.
