The Vijayanagara Empire which spread across the country, from the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Sea at its zenith, had its capital at Hampi. It is here that you find the Royal Enclosure, the residence of the Vijayanagara kings. The passage of time has not been kind to the complex and most of it lies in ruins. Whatever remains however still provides you with a glimpse of the grandeur of those times.
The Mahanavami Dibba, still evokes images of the king with his queens sitting and enjoying the festivities and processions from the balconies. The Queen’s Bath is a magnificent structure with the Pushkarini, the Stepped Tank which was filled with water through an aqueduct from the Tungabhadra River. Set in a geometrical pattern the Pushkarini is covered with intricate carvings.
Constructed using a blend of Indo-Islamic architecture, the Lotus Mahal, a grand and beautiful structure is the crowning glory of the Royal Enclosure. Other than these there are the Hazara Rama Temple, the Elephant Stables and the underground Shiva Temple.
