SDAT Stadium (Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu Tennis Stadium) or Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium, is situated in Nungambakkam, Chennai. This venue is host to the Chennai Open ATP Tennis events every January and attracts participation from far and wide. Built in time with the hosting of South Asian Federation Games in the city, this stadium was built by the by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1995. Ever since 1997, this stadium has hosted the Indian Open tennis tournament—every year.
The SDAT stadium was witness to some dramatic scenes in the year 1998, when Patrick Rafter and Boris Becker had participated in the Goldflake Open –wherein Rafter was the winner of the tournament. This stadium has also seen the celebrated birth and growth of the Indian doubles pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes—who were the winners of the first three seasons of the popular Goldflake Open. This complex boasts of five hard courts that include a floodlit centre court with a capacity of seating 5,800 people. In May 2009, the 3rd round of the Davis Cup tie between Australia and India (Asia/Oceania Group I) had taken place here. It was also the venue of Davis Cup tie from 17th–19th September 2010. The Indian Davis Cup team had defeated its Brazilian counterpart during the 2010 Davis Cup World Group Play-offs and had advanced to the Davis Cup World Group of 2011. A must visit!
