Sedona and thereabouts?

I`m starting to plan out my fall trip to the States. For now, I have time in mid-October that I`d like to devote to Sedona, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon. I can spend up to two weeks in the area, but I figure a week or so should be plenty of time.
I`ve found a well priced 7-day Caravan tour that has overnights in Sedona, the Grand Canyon, and Lake Powell, but they also go to Bryce and Zion parks, which I`ve already spent some time in, and don`t feel any compelling reason to return to right now (as opposed to the Grand Canyon, which I will enthusastically return to again and again!)
So here`s my question:
Any thoughts on- instead of taking the Caravan tour- basing myself in Sedona, and from there taking various jeeps trips in the area, as well as a trip to Monument Valley, and then ending the time with a night or two in the Grand Canyon?
If I decide to use Sedona as a base, how long should I plan to be there? 5 days? A week? A bit longer? Should I think about adding a couple of nights in Phoenix?
(As I`ll be traveling alone, so the cost of joining the Caravan tour or not will come out to about the same.)
Aside from the days in Bryce and Zion (and subsequent long bus rides- the tour starts in Phoenix and ends in Las Vegas), the other `plusses and minuses` between Caravan and being independent are:
- If I go independent, I`ll likely rent a car, so will be doing all the driving myself.
- If I go with Caravan, I won`t have as much time to hike and explore as I like (I LOVE taking nature walks and hikes!)
Any thoughts, insights, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. BTW, besides hiking, I have an interest in Native American history and culture, so any suggestions regarding tours, `not to miss`, etc, are very welcome!
I also am a meditation and alternative medicine devotee, hence my wanting to spend some time in Sedona, which leads to one more question: Has anyone experienced the energy vortexes in the Sedona area? Any recommendations for a `vortex guide` in the area?
