A replica of the monument in Iraq bearing the same name, the Shah Najaf Imambara in Lucknow was commissioned by the Nawab, Ghazi-ud-Din Haider. Dedicated to the son-in-law of Prophet Mohamed, Shah Najaf and built in the same design as the tomb of Shah Najaf or Hazrat Ali ;as he is also known. The Imamabara is also known as the Karbala. The patron of the Imambara, Ghazi-ud-Din Haider, is buried here along with his three wives.
Standing on the banks of the River Gomti, the Imamabara is a dome shaped structure. The tomb of Haider is made of silver and that of one of his wives is made of both silver and gold. Intricate designs adorn the inside of the monument in hues of blue and white. Passageways line the central dome of the Imambara. The entire complex is lit up on the birth anniversary of Hazrat Ali and is truly a sight not to be missed. A trip to this venue of religious and historic significance is a must for all tourists in the region.
