Ranking among the ancient temples dedicated to Sheetala Devi (Lucknow) in the sub-continent, the precincts of this popular sightseeing location is shrouded in mystery. According to legends, Sheetala Devi Temple was badly ravaged by intruders in the era gone by. Thereafter, a beautiful statue of the goddess was found in the waters of a pool, which was located nearby. This was counted as a boon by the heavens and led to the re-construction of this ornate temple. It is believed that Tikait Rai, a minister in the court of the Nawab, had ordered the construction a large pond in close proximity to this temple. The numerous steps leading to the pond are an interesting highlight of the Sheetala Devi Temple and attract devotees from all parts of the country. This pond is also known as the Tikait Raika Talab. Best visited during the colorful festival of Holi (when the temple hosts the beautiful Aathonka Mela) , this temple is considered auspicious for newlyweds and newborns alike.
