At 1966 meters above sea level, the Shillong peak is the highest point in Meghalaya. A popular tourist spot that offers a panaromic view of the city of Shillong and its surrounding terrains, the peak also is a spot that is considered sacred and is dedicated to U Shulong, the local deity of this place. Locals as well as visitors trek up to the peak to enjoy the unfettered view that is on offer. Packing a small picnic lunch and heading out to the peak is a wonderful way to spend a day at Shillong.
The view of the houses dotting the city and the hills surrounding it leaves you astounded and awestruck. The clarity of the view from this peak makes it a photographer’s delight. For the more adventurists, a night up on the peak will reward you with an amazing view of the stars on a clear night along with the twinkling of lights-- as the city of Shillong lights up. A ritual held to honor the U Shulong is held here every year in spring. The view from the peak is definitely worth the effort of climbing to the top.
