The place derives its name from Mata Kaali – Hindu goddess, who is believed to destroy the evil. Originally it was called as Shyamala until Charles Kennedy who was from Scotland, built his house in 1822. Then the term Simla originated and continued to be the same during British rule. It was changed after independence and Shimla was used instead of Simla. It is during the British rule when the place grew tremendously. The Kalka-Shimla railway track was built at that time which is still functioning. A number of quality educational institutions were formed too. Shimla is best known for its education. The Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, which is Asia’s only institute of Advanced Studies, is in Shimla. A number of renowned schools and colleges are also there.
