What should one know about the Goa carnival?

The carnival help in Goa is quite well known all throughout the world and visitors especially make their travel arrangements in such a way that they can witness the fun and frolic atmosphere and take part in the celebrations. The carnival is held in the month of February and usually goes on for three to four days. The carnival is held before the beginning of the “Lent period”, which is typically six weeks before Easter.
During the Lent period people restrain themselves from consuming alcohol, rich foods, dairy products and even sweets and sugar. What is truly amazing about this is that almost everyone takes part in this celebration. Lively processions, dances live music, everything is held on the streets, thus making it easier for the common man to attend this and be a part of this. There are live performances which are held on the streets and the celebration goes on non-stop for these three to four days. People eagerly wait for this carnival all throughout the year. It feels as if there is a street party happening on the streets of Goa. People dress up wearing different masks and are in a mood of merry making , fun and frolic. Irrespective of any cast, creed or religion take part in this carnival.
