Shillong as a place offers a lot of place where gambling takes place, and this known as , “Siat Khnam”. This sport is quite unique as in this you will see a semicircle of photogenic old Khasi men, who fire hundreds of arrows at a straw trussed target. Then the sticks are counted and bets are laid out and the one predict the last two digits of this total.
This lottery is believed to be very effective, and quite a fascination amongst the Khasi tribe. Shooting is generally held daily at 3.30pm and 4.30pm, except on Sunday when a different version is played. Timings also change and vary as per the season.
One cannot miss the site of the Siat Khnam site, as this held in a small grassy area, which is approximately opposite the big Nehru Stadium, located on the south river bank. If you want to drive to that area then you would need to drive there head east, pass the Mizo Church, the go left towards the Bampfyled Road, and then after crossing the hill descend to the river and then take a turn left, from here you will see that the ground is almost immediately to your right. If you plan to walk down then you should take the footpath, which goes down to Ginger Restaurant or the Polo Towers Hotel. You should continue walking just beyond to Polo Market, and then turn towards the right. You would be walking in front of the Matri Mandir, which is in the northern side and along the riverside road for about 1km. Here at this point you will see that the ground is almost opposite to the entrance to an army officers housing area.
