Sitamarhi has to its aboard many religious and historical spots. The pilgrimage tourism in particular has over the years attracted many devotees. The pilgrim places mark some of the most important events in the history of Indian religion. It is believed that Sita, wife of Lord Rama was born here and there and The Janaki temple was constructed in her devotion.
Legends even have it that Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas was also born here. The Haleshwar temple lies 3 Kms in the northwest of the district. It is said that King Videha founded a temple on the occasion of Putra Yeshti yajna and dedicated it to Lord Shiva and hence the temple got its name.
There also lies Baghi Math or Monastery, approximately 7 Kms Northwest of Sitamarhi. The humongous Hindu monastery has 108 rooms and is a frequent place of worship and Yajnas. Apart from being a prominent place of Hindu temples and monasteries, Sitamarhi also has places that are of holy value to Muslims as well. The Goraul Sharif is sacred place for Muslims which is located 26 Kms from Sitamarhi.
