It is believed that Sonepur is the place where Vishnu ended the prehistoric battle between the elephants and the crocodiles. This is what Gajendra Moksha legend says. Elephants who were the lords of the forests and crocodiles who were of the water, had a battle and was resolved by Lord Vishnu. Thus the place has a religious significance for the Hindus. Each year there is Sonepur Mela conducted here to celebrate the infamous tale.
The place is located near the bank of river Ganges and therefore devotees take holy bathe in the river. Asia’s largest cattle fair also takes place here where a number if elephants are bought and sold. Sonepur is located 25 kms from Patna and can be easily approached via road.
