There is a sizeable population of the Sikh community in Chennai and there are a few Gurudwaras there as well. Gurudwara means the ‘doors to the Guru’ and is the place of worship for the community. Sri Guru Nanak Satsangh Sabha is a well known Gurudwara in Chennai. Known for its kirtans (hymns in praise of God) and its langar (food which is the Prasad) the Gurudwara draws not only the Sikh community but others as well.
Celebrating all their religious, ceremonial occasions as well as weddings, the Gurudwara acts as a community centre as well for the Sikh community. The Gurudwara also runs a medical centre which provides free medication to the poor and the needy. The place is decorated and celebrations on festivals like Baisakhi (Sikh New Year) and the birth anniversaries of the Sikh Gurus are something that should not be missed.
