Located a mere seven kilometers from Trichy, Srirangam - a six hundred acre island lies between the Kaveri River and its tributary the Kollidam River. Home to the famous and revered Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, the island is also home to a large population of Vaishnavites (the followers of Lord Vishnu). Considered the most important of the 108 main temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is also the world’s largest functioning temple.
The island is connected to the mainland via a bridge. The effects of urbanization and modernization can now be felt in Srirangam as the effects of the same from Tiruchirappalli is slowly creeping up on the island. Shops selling all kinds of merchandise and eating places have mushroomed up on the island, but nothing can take away from the serene and pious ambiance of the temples. The island was and is known for the divine self-manifested shrine of Lord Vishnu (Swayam Vyakta Kshetrams).
