The oldest church in the city of Bangalore, the St. Mary’s Basilica Church, is the only church in the state of Karnataka to be given the status of a minor basilica. Located in the Shivajinagar area of the city, the church was built under the aegis of Ashok Ajith Kumar. Originally a thatched hut way back in the 17th century, the church was then known as the Chapel of Kanikkai Madha or the Church of Our Lady of Presentation. The church as we see it today was built in 1875. Gothic architecture giving the building the form of a cross, the St. Mary’s basilica has a 160 foot high spire. Stained glass windows add a touch of beauty to this building. One hundred and seventy two feet long and fifty feet in width, the church has a shrine on the outside – a six feet high statue of Mother Mary with the infant Jesus in her arms. The shrine draws a large number of followers daily and the statue is draped in a different saree everyday, a saree which is offered by devotees as a gift to the shrine.
Shivajinagar is a very busy part of Bangalore and yet the moment you enter the church premises, you can feel the peace and calm in the ambience around you. Celebrating the Feast of St. Mary in September, the church is filled with devotees and followers participating in the festivities with gusto and enthusiasm. A visit to the church and the shrine is a must when you are next in Bangalore.
