St Mary’s church is one of the oldest Catholic Church located in the city of Secunderabad. This is also known as the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad. The construction of the church started in the year 1840 and was finally completed in 1850.
The church is mainly constructed in a Gothic style which has the pointed buttresses and curved arches. This is was the largest church in the state of Hyderabad during the late 19th century. One can recognize the church very easily as there is large statue of the Virgin Mary which is kept right outside the gate of the church.
The roof of the church is wooden, and the windows have been decorated with stained glass and one can see four church bells, which people believe have been brought from Italy. The seat of the bishop was transferred from Secunderabad to Hyderabad due to which the church lost the state as a cathedral. Very recently the church was again been upgraded to a Basilica. Upon visiting the church one can enjoy spending a few quiet moments thinking about the lord and offering prayers to the god. There is so much of peace that one can feel while visiting this holy place.
