The Stakna Gompa, Leh is an epitome of peace, ultimate beauty as well as tranquility. This place offers you an opportunity to get an insight into the culture of Buddhism, and is a well known Buddhist monastery. This beautiful and old monastery got its name from the hill on which it is built. The meaning of the term “Stakna” refers to the nose of a tiger. The Stakna monastery is full of many different delicate as well as intricate carvings, murals and images, and even the much respected Arya Avalokitesvara from Assam which represents the Buddhist culture.
The Stakna monastery was originally established in the 16th century by a Bhutanese scholar and saint, Chosie Jamyang Palkar. This monastery is truly a sight to be observed. The monastery now serves as a residence of the Lamas, and one can see the lovely views of the softly flowing river Indus along with grandiose mountains which surround the Stakna monastery. One can literally get soaked in the peace that one acquires upon visiting this lovely place.
