The Thiksey monastery 20 Km away fromLeh. is the largest monastery located in Central Ladakh and this monastery also has the biggest statue of Maitreya Buddha in the whole of Ladakh. This monastery was established in established in the year 1970, which also commemorated XIV Dalai Lama's visit to the monastery. The Thiksey monastery is a 12 storeyed monastery and all the storeys are arranged in the order of significance. The monastery is very ancient, spectacular and is deeply embedded in legends and the folktales. The lodging units are located on the lower floors, the residence of the monastery and Chief Lama's is on the uppermost floors. This monastery is known to be a replica of the Potala Palace architecture wise. One can see an amazing view of the Indus Valley, and one can easily locate the Matho Gompa located in the east, Stok Palace located in the south and the Shey Palace towards the west. There is a 49 feet statue of Maitreya Buddha which is in a seated cross legged meditative position. This is the largest statue of Maitreya Buddha in Ladakh which covers almost two storeys of the monastery. One can see various places in the monastery with swords, Stupas, stone reliefs, murals, Thangkas and statues.
