A trip to Kottayam is incomplete without visiting the 500 year old Thirunakkara Mahadev Temple. Built by the Raja of Thekkumkoor in the Kerala architectural style, the temple retains its grandeur and style, as before. Murals depicting scenes from the epics adorn the interiors of the temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the main deity of the temple. But there are shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha as well.
The temple celebrates three major festivals every year, each of them celebrated with tremendous fervor and zeal. The high point of the Thirunakkara Mahadev Temple is its ten day long festival “Aaraattu” that transcends pilgrims into a completely different atmosphere. Folk music, Kathakali dances and other such festivities create an aura of excitement for the locals and tourists alike. A must visit for one and all!
