Travel 4 weeks in New Zealand

My husband and I recently returned from 4 weeks in New Zealand, both islands, and we had a wonderful trip. We want to thank all the who contributed ideas and experiences that helped shape our itinerary. We spent 10 days on the North Island in Auckland, Glow Worm Caves, Lake Taupo, Napier and Wellington. Napier was a real highlight - a small town on the east coast that was destroyed in a 1931 earthquake and rebuilt in the style of the day - art deco. A wonderful city for walking around in. We also liked Wellington a lot. We accomplished (barely) doing the Tongariro Alpine Walk - all 11 miles. We loved the scenery of the South Island from Picton and Nelson to Dunnedin and the Catlins. We loved Abel Tasman Park, the drive to Milford Sound, the drive between Queenstown and Wanaka, the drive up the north west coast from Hasst to Murchison etc etc! The scenery was breathtaking. We found the driving on the left side to be challenging at first but with so few cars on the road, we soon felt secure. We spent an overnight on Stewart Island specifically for birding and saw kiwis. We enjoyed Christchurch quite a bit - that`s where our son is studying so we had a good tour guide. We especially enjoyed our tour with Elm Wildlife on the Otago Peninsula which was a specific recommendation of a and we totally agree with the recommendation! Penguins, seals, sea lions and albatross. So thank you all and we`re happy to give anyone else the benefit of our experience if they`re headed to NZ.
