Travel Albuquerque and Santa Fe Mixico

My daughter is travelling solo for the first time and has chosen a trip to New Mexico. She is going in June and will initially spend a few days in Albuquerque attending some classes at the Indian Pueblo Cultural centre. She will have a part of every day free for sightseeing. For this first part of the trip, she`s hoping not to have to rent a car and I`m wondering if this is feasible. Is there any public transportation or any day tours that she might be able to take? And, most importantly, does anyone have a recommendation for nice accomodation that would be fairly close to the Centre. She`s looking for something "middle of the road" price wise and, as she`s on her own is a bit worried about going too budget! When the classes are over, she will rent a car and drive to see "The Lightning Fields" exhibit, stay overnight as required and then drive up to Santa Fe for a few days before returning home. She`d love some ideas on accomodation in Santa Fe - interesting places she`s found look very expensive!
