Hello Everyone, I haven`t been around for quite some time. We had the most amazing winter touring the Southern US in our micro mini RV.
Since we got back I have been trying to work up some enthusiasm to plan another trip. We will be Snowbirding again this winter but hope to abandon our RV for three weeks and fly out of LAX to Japan in time to catch the cherry blossoms.
Blossoms which I hope will be at their peak somewhere along our route During the last week of March and first two in April.
My wish list so far: Sumo tournament in Osaka (late March) Himeji Samurai Castle Hiroshima Peace Park and Bomb Dome Ferry to Miyajima Geisha dance festival in Kyoto Fuji 5 lakes for the Itchkju Kubota (kimono)Art Museum Nagano for snow monkeys Hike Kiso Valley Magome to Tsumago more if time permitting. Tokyo probably only one full day before flight home.
Most travel will be done using the JR rail pass.
Himeji is undergoing major renovations and as of April 2010 will be covered for the next five years. I hope this means I will have a chance to see it before then in late March but if not can anyone suggest a substitute?
I would love to hear from anyone with experience of travelling in Japan either independently or on a tour. Where you went, what you enjoyed, what you wish you had done.
As I usually travel in places like South East Asia, China or India, I fear I am going to get severe sticker shock when booking rooms in Japan. Any recommendations for inexpensive places to stay in cities and somewhere to maybe splurge in traditional Ryokan somewhere especially beautiful. Tall order I know but all information will be gratefully received.
