Travel Montreal canada

On July 16, my husband and I celebrate the 42nd anniversaryc of meeting each other. Since our 15-year-old dog gave up the ghost this spring, we are now able to travel together, and have decided that we would like to celebrate (our anniversary, not the demise of our dog) by spending a long weekend in Montreal. We were there in June of 1967 for Expo 67. At that time we stayed at the Maple Lakes Inn which was CAD 5 per night -- bathroom down the hall and extremely noisy bar below. In 1968, when I was pregnant with our first child, we returned on a holiday weekend to find no room at that inn nor any other except for the Ritz Carleton. Having no choice, we busted our budget on a CAD 30 room there. I returned in 1995 for a day trip with a group of French exchange students who had no idea that French was spoken in Canada! The bottom line is that I would love some advice about where to stay and what to do. We tend to be very frugal travelers (although recognize real value when we see it), like B&B`s, love to soak up the atmosphere, and will gladly walk until we drop. We will be driving, so would also appreciate any suggestions about parking on the outskirts so as to avoid dicey issues with driving and parking in the city.
