Travel South America suggestions

My wife and I, both Seniors, will be taking a cruise from Valparaiso to Buenos Aires in about a month. We will arrive at the Santiago-Valparaiso airport a couple days before the cruise leaves. We expect that we will spend those days in either Santiago or Valparaiso. We would appreciate any comments about which of the two cities is better for two days of sightseeing, and which is better, in terms of location and reasonable pricing, for hotels. The cruise will make stops in Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas in Chile, in Ushuaia and Puerto Madryn in Argentina, and in Montevideo and Punta del Este, Uruguay. Rather than take shore excursions arranged by the ship, we would prefer to make our own arrangements in advance if they can be done inexpensively and with a reliable provider. Suggestions will again be appreciated. Finally, at the end of the trip, we will have the better part of four days in Buenos Aires, including 12 April which is Easter Sunday. We anticipate that there will be no shortage of activities, but if anyone has suggestions about out-of-the way, not-to-be missed places or activities, they will be appreciated.
