Located on a hilltop overlooking the Meenachil River is one of the oldest churches in Kerala. Valiyapally, which means a big church in Malayalam, is huge and gives competition to another church in Cheriyapally—which is bigger in size. Dedicated to Mother Mary, Valiyapally is the mother church for the locals. Beautiful architecture and stunning interiors make this church a place worth visiting by both the locals and tourists. The unique feature in the interiors are the intricate carvings that cover the entire area behind the alter – leading from the floor to the ceiling. Persian inscriptions and 8th Century crosses adorn this church-- making it a destination worth a look; if not for the grandeur of the place then definitely for the peace and serenity that you find there.
