Built in the 16th century, the Vellore Fort is known for its strong and fortified construction – a wide moat, large ramparts and very strong and effective masonry. A temple, a mosque and a church, all three places of worship find place within the ramparts of the Vellore Fort. There is a tunnel which was used as an escape route that leads all the way to Virinjipuram which is nearly twelve kilometers away. A large number of the buildings inside the fort are now used as public offices. The famous Vellore Christian Hospital is also located within the fort premises. Here, you will see many locals mingling with tourists from far and beyond.
