The Indian state of West Bengal is located in the eastern region of India and is also regarded as fourth-most populous state of the country India. This is also ranks as the seventh-most populous sub-national entity in the world, with over 91 million inhabitants. The state is spread in an area of over 34,267 sq mi (88,750 km2). The state of West Bengal shares its border with the countries like Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh, and the Indian states of Jharkhand, Sikkim, Bihar, Odisha, and Assam. Kolkata is the capital of this Indian state. There are two main region of the state of West Bengal which are the sub-Himalayan and Himalayan area in the north and the Gangetic Plain in the south
Initially West Bengal was a part of many major Vedic kingdoms as well as many large Indian empires like those of Gupta empire, during the 4rth century and the Maurya empire, during the 2nd century BC, the regional Pala Empire which existed from the 8th to the 11th century, the Sena dynasty which existed from the 11th to the 12th century. From the 13th century the state was ruled by many Hindu kings, sultans, as well as the Baro-Bhuyan landlords, this was until the beginning of British rule, which began in the 18th century.
The state of West Bengal was quite a prominent feature in the Indian Independence through the early 20th century. The British East India Company further strengthened their stay on this region which was later also followed by the Battle of Plassey in the year 1757, and Calcutta later was the capital of the British India. The presence of the British administration resulted in the expansion of Western education, culminated in the development of science, expansion of institutional education, and social reforms of the region, and was also referred to as the Bengal Renaissance. Bengal was also portioned into two separate entities which was West Bengal, state of India, and East Bengal which was a portion of the newly created Pakistan and this later becoming Bangladesh in the year 1971.
West Bengal ranks as the sixth-largest contributor to India's net domestic product. The state is also well known for the political activism and was later on democratically elected communist government for three decades. The state is also known its cultural activities and educational institutions. The capital of the state if Kolkata and is known as the "cultural capital of India". The state is well known for the varied folk traditions, literature which includes the Nobel-laureate Rabindranath Tagore. There are many film makers, musicians, and artists.
