Onam is the biggest festival of the Kerala, which is scheduled to take place during August–September, the period known as the Malayali month of Chingam. It is believed that legendary King, Mahabali, had returned home on this day. Onam marks the beginning of a ten-day celebration, followed by a string of feasting, dancing, religious ceremonies, music performances and singing. The same period holds one of most thrilling events of the festival, the snake-boat racing, where the oarsmen compete on their snake boats amidst the lagoons, embellished with palms.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race
It is one of the most popular and exciting events of the Munnar. Held on the second saturday of August month, the venue for the race is Punnamada lake that has spectator pavilions built along the banks. The ceremony takes off with beautifully decorated and colorful floats & boats, and traditional performances. The festivities that run throughout the day and last late into the evening see separate races for women.
Thrissur Pooram Festival
Celebrated in the month of May, Thrissur Pooram Festival is a massive show. The festival witnesses about thirty decorated elephants walking gracefully through the streets with loads of object, symbolic of revered royalty. The disciplined elephants stand and watch with dignity, while the priests play on conch, trumpet, cymbals and drums, the ancient Panchavadyam.
Celebrated in February, this festival is an all women affair. It is the single only temple festival in the whole world where women gather in the Attukal temple to make offerings. As per the ritual, they cook a pudding and offer it to the goddess in the temple. After the temple’s priest comes and sprinkles holy water on the pudding, it is brought to home.
