The Tansen Festival
This amazing festival defines the cultural heritage of Gwalior. Tansen, the master musician and one of the Navratnas in Akbar’s court, had practised here and started a legacy of classical music which is still there in the heart and soul of the city.
Celebrated every year in the month of November or December, musicians and music-enthusiasts from different parts of the country hold hands to organize this grand event. It is considered a great privilege for every musician to be a part of this festival. Madhya Pradesh government supports this festival that draws huge crowds. They encourage the festival by allowing free entry to this 4-day event. Make sure you come early to occupy a suitable seat.
Ganesh Chaturthi falls in September. Locals celebrated the festival with great fun and fervor. The festival witnesses a series of traditional customs and procession of Jhankis or floats all through the streets and lanes of the city. Everyone greets the carnival with great gusto. The locals in the festival are humble and make sure tourists are well accommodated.
Rang Panchmi is another popular festival in the city, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The festival which comes after five days of Dulendi (Holi), Rang Panchmi sees people playfully sprinkling water, mixed with colours, on friends and relatives and having fun. The festivals are always the time of laughter and joy, which are way too many in Gwalior.
