Why, Oh Why, Did You Love Paris?

We`re heading to Paris for a week at the beginning of October, and then to Barcelona for a week.
We`ve been concentrating more on Paris, and have read and read and done lots of research on the Net. We`ve rented an apartment near the Louvre on the right bank. We have a great guidebook, lots of maps, and we think we`re informed on transit, the main sights, etc. etc. We`ve sketched out a rough itinerary for ourselves.
But we`re hoping that will be able to tell us about some of their favourite "hidden" or "small" treasures in the City of Light. Things that have meant a lot to you, perhaps something you may have not really intended to do, but just happened upon. We don`t like to spend too much on meals and are hoping for picnics, and some nights, want to pick up food from a shop and take back to our apartment. We`ll get our own breakfast, of course, and we welcome any and all thoughts on meals and shops.
We`d also love to hear any sort of tips that you can give us. A friend just told us about how she kept putting more money in a machine to get RER train tickets, and thought the machine wasn`t working, til she realized they were falling out the bottom. So, we know what to watch for while trying this! Anything of this nature would be great to know.
