Wular Lake—the largest fresh water lake of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is situated at a distance of 50 km from heart of Srinagar and is a popular picnic spot among locals and tourists from all across the world. Sprawling over an area of 200 sq km, the surface of Wular Lake is subjected to various changes—all across the year.
Wular Lake is mostly calm in its appearance and attracts with its serene and lush environs. However, on certain occasions, it becomes the nurturing grounds for heavy currents generated by fierce winds that blow its way. The 'Gulf of corpses' or Mota Khon is the deepest area of the lake and is supposed to be the resting place of the bodies of people downed in the lake. Plenty of legends and folklores abound in the region and speak volumes of the popularity of Lake Wular. Though swimming is not a favorite activity for tourists in this attractive tourist spot, they are seen indulging in a lot of merrymaking, boating, fishing and photography–be there!
