The Yung Drung Gompa is known to be the earliest existing monastery in the place Ladakh. The monastery is located at a high altitude which is high above the village of Lamayuru. It is believed that at the bottom of the valley, was chosen by the Kashmiri yogi Naropa in the early 11th century. You could even ask the monks to show you the Naropa’s cave.
One of the oldest parts of the complex is located below the Du-khang and is currently in a state of ruins. As you enter the temple, one can see life-sized image of Vairochana Buddha. Apart from this one can also see many statues which have gradually worn out with the due course of time, many statues of the mandalas as well as the tantric deities, and a carved doorway which looks quite similar to the ones at Alchi. The Yung Drung Gompa monastery can be visited on all the days of the week except Sunday from 6:00 AM - 7:00 PM.
