As the name suggests the Lucknow Zoological Gardens or also known as the Prince of Wales Zoological is located right in the heart of the city in a 71.6-acre area. This zoo has been categorized as the largest zoo in Indian by the Central Zoo Authority of India. This zoo was set up in the year 1921 when the Prince of Wales visited Lucknow. This was originally the idea of Sir Harcourt Butler, who was the governor of state that time.
The visit to the zoo is a must visit while visiting Lucknow, the city of Nawabs. The Zoo is inhabited by almost 261 types of birds, 40 reptiles belonging to 97 species, 440 mammals, and also animals like the Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, Wolf, Zebra, Asiatic Elephant, Indian Rhinoceros White Tiger, Hoolock Gibbon, Barking Deer , Great Pied Hornbill , Common Otters , Giraffe, Himalayan Black Bear, Silver Pheasant , Black buck, Swamp Deer, Golden Pheasant Hog Deer, Hill Mynahs, Giant Squirrels, etc. The Zoo is successfully breeding Hog Deer, Barking deer, Indian Wolf, Swamp Deer, Black Buck, , White Tiger, and many other pheasants.
The Entry timings for the zoo are from 8:30am to 7:00pm, from Tuesday to Sunday. There is no entry fee for visiting the park.
Within the premises of the zoo there is a very State museum. The entry fee for Indian is Rs 5 and for foreigners is Rs 50. In case you wish to click pictures then there is a charge of Rs 20 for carrying your camera. This museum has a very fine collection of some beautiful sculptures and master pieces, which host a wide variety like a dancing girl and that of Buddha. The other galleries located here also display the skills of the other local artists which resided during the ruler ship of the nawabs.
